Iono's Indomitable Spirit (A Collaboration with The Ruby Chao)

Bond Bridge
Please be quiet when crossing.
Berry Forest ahead

So read the words carved into the sign erected on the shore leading to the unostentatious wooden span crossing over the strait between the so-called "parent" and "child" islands of Three Island. Discolored by time and the elements as the sign may be, those in the vicinity of the bridge honor the sign's request. The few campers and picnickers dotting the path between Kin Island's town and the bridge keep their voices low and keep quiet as they go about their business. Even travelers, crossing back from the forest with baskets full of berries and fruits, keep their idle chatter to a minimum.

The lapping of the waves on the beaches, the plunking of Slowpoke dippng their tails into the water, the rustling of the wind through the trees, very little disturbs them or the air of tranquility around the bridge. Here, one could be forgiven for forgetting that the Bond Bridge stands only a short distance away from the largest town in the Sevii Islands.

And yet, if you’re a gym badge hunter, here to find the gym leader of Three Island and challenge her to both her trial and her proper gym battle, you certainly don’t forget it - after all, each island’s town is happy to talk about their leader, speaking of them in friendly and engaging terms. That’s why Iono is once again on stream, looking into her camera with a grin. “Hello, Iono Zone viewers! Wow, they really never built anything with this small island, huh?

…Actually, it’s kind of weird how many of the islands are more than one island, isn’t it?”

As Iono approaches the bridge proper, a familiar face comes into view! In a prime position to peer out over the water and focus on some distant point in the sea, Celio, instead, pays the water no heed whatsoever, seemingly lost in his phone, scrolling and tapping, apparently typing in short bursts.

Iono notices Celio, remembering him from last time, and runs up to the computer nerd with her usual sharky smile. “Heyyy, it’s the fan! Uhhh… ummmm. Chaaa- WAIT NO!

Celio! That’s it! How’s it feel to meet your wonderful idol again, huh?”

"Huw?" Iono's greeting snaps Celio out of the stupor he appears to be in, the man whipping around to see who's addressing him before sliding his phone into his pocket with a sheepish look of recognition. "Oh, hi, Iono." He returns her greeting without much enthusiasm, just getting his bearings. "You're streaming already? Was I out here that long?" A glance at the shadows all around tells him that it's past noon, confirming his suspicions.

"Aha, sorry," he nervously chuckles. "I'm planning to tune in, but I guess I lost track of the time. It's great we bumped into each other. I wouldn't want to miss this stream!"

“Heeeh, of course you wouldn’t! Hey, one of these days, as long as you keep showing up like this, you oughta come on stream yourself!

I mean, besides how you already are.”

"I'm not sure I'd be as entertaining to watch as you are, but… We could try it, someday. We could make a surprise out of it. Wouldn't that be great for your stream? If we were on together to do something nobody would expect?"

“I’m down! Let’s see what happens! But first…” Iono strikes a pose. “I’ve got a badge to win! Two down, five to go, this should be easy! You know about this gym leader, right? Any hot deets you can spill to a gal?”

"Right, you should be focused on that now," he affirms, as if dispelling some notion from his mind. "Kin Island's gym leader isn't like Léan or Ultima. She's younger, and so she usually uses more experimental strategies. Oh, but, you probably just need the basics. I'd say you should be prepared for the unexpected, and, whatever you do - you haven't used any in your previous battles, but, still - you don't want to send out any Psychic types. You'll be at a severe disadvantage. And, besides that, um," he hesitates, casting around for the right advice to offer. "Besides that, you should just know that you'll have to go deep into the Berry Forest to meet her. She likes to meet challengers far into the interior."

“Alrightyyyy! Thanks again, Celio!” Iono waves. “I’ll see you after I win! Goodbye, sayonara, auf wiedersehen!" Walking backwards, Iono spins on her heels as she enters Berry Forest, ready to take it on!

"Good luuuck!" He calls out as Iono quests onwards, disappearing into the forest. Iono gone, he pulls his phone back out, returning to what he had been looking at. His thumb hovers over the screen, before, finally, he clicks into a different app, setting his concerns aside for now as he tunes into Iono's stream.

Leaving Celio and the bridge behind, Iono ventures into the woods. The world dims only a few feet in, the canopy above denying the forest floor all but a fraction of the sun's rays. Even here at the edge of the Berry Forest, the forest makes it difficult to keep a grasp on the weather, with bright and clear no longer all that distinct from a dim and grey overcast day. Deeper in the forest, where the canopy only twists itself into a tighter seal for the light and the exits recede from sight, night and day themselves begin to blend.

Proceeding further and further inwards, Iono passes by a succession of company as the light fades, the berry-pickers near the forest edges giving way to Pidgey scurrying across the ground and Weepinbell swaying on the branches above. The birds and the pitcher plants soon, in turn, yield to Oddish, planting themselves in the ground with only their twitching leaves exposed, and Venonat, bounding over tree roots in search of the little insects buzzing around the berries rotting on the forest floor.

Soon, even the Venonat disappear, the activity that had kept the forest from feeling lonely and barren ceasing. Iono no longer glimpses plants and bugs, only the occasional flicker of light which, here where so little sunlight penetrates the canopy, has no business being so bright. Leaves rustle wherever Iono goes, yet no wind blows through the trees here. When there's no flickering light, there's always the transient gleam of watchful eyes, even with no critters or creatures around…

“Hmmmm…” Iono says, her eyes flickering to chat. “So uh, chat. Three Island. You know what type they use?”

“Gotta be dark, homegirl”
“It’s ghost! Of course!”
“Bug. I mean, are you seeing who’s in this?”
“Lmao that guy’s working for the enemy. He’s rusing us”
“I want Iono to step on me”
“My vote is it doesn’t matter! It’s the Iono Zone!”

Regarding her chat with the same input value as usual, Iono looks behind her to try and get her bearings… only to double-take as she realizes it looks like the trees behind her now block any way back. Looking over her shoulder suspiciously, Iono keeps going forward, now watching everything extra-carefully.

"Are…" It's barely more than a whisper. A voice carries through the trees, over Iono's shoulder, but when the streamer turns back to look for its source, there's nothing. There's not so much as a sign of anyone behind her.

"You…" The same voice pipes up as she continues onwards, this time coming from somewhere in front of her, obscured by the trees. "Lost…?" A light flares to life, a small flame floating in the distance - and, for once, persisting - its pulsing glow beckoning her towards it. "Unless you want to be lost here with the spirits, you'd better follow me," comes the voice again, this time from the same direction as the flame.

“IT’S A TRAP”
“It is, but what choice do we have?”
“FOLLOW THAT TRAP”
“I can’t believe Iono is going to fucking die”

Iono agrees with her chat: It’s probably a trick or a trap. But, unsure of what else to do, she sends out Rotom, and the two of them begin to follow the flame together, neither of them very sure as to what’s going on, but knowing there’s only one real option here… especially after the place locked up the path back.

"You're a brave one, aren't you? So brave, so strong, so pretty," the voice continues as Iono draws nearer and nearer to the will-o'-the-wisp casting its light on the forest. "Just keep coming closer," it implores. "A long time ago, they used to tell good little children to stay away from the Berry Forest. They said that there were horrible Pokémon inside that took away little children."

"But those horrible Pokémon are gone now," the mysterious narrator continues, suddenly dropping their almost-inviting tone, seemingly spitting out the words with a vindictive venom. "Now this forest belongs to the spirits…"

"...and so… do… you!"

The voice beckoning Iono onwards bursts into a fit of giggling as she finally reaches the flame, standing directly beneath it. The laughter no longer emanates from behind Iono, nor from anywhere in front of her. It surrounds her, echoing through the trees all around her.

Looking around, and actually feeling nervous for the first time, Iono frets a bit as she tries to keep up with what exactly’s going on. She nearly takes a step back, trying to keep herself from breaking and running. Only Rotom flickering wildly, back in the Electric/Ghost lightbulb-based mode, is able to keep her from losing her nerve as she flails her sleeves around.

“Okay, you had your fun! Live on c-camera, even! Now show yourself, or I’ll have to, uh… uh……. Something or other!”

"There's only ooooneeee way out, now! You've come all the way into the home of ghosts, and we'll only let you go when we've had our fun with you! If you want to get out of here with your soul, you'll…"

A shadow rushes by Iono, near enough and quick enough to even ruffle her hair. As if the air itself had thrown off a cloak, the shadow's passing unveils a figure right in front of Iono. "...have to find me in a game of hide-and-seek!" The new figure's voice matches that of the voice luring Iono deeper into the woods. They step forward, the flame above them illuminating their features. Purple hair, a pale red sash, some kind of a strange white headband…

"You'll play a game with us, won't you, Iono?"

“Wat.” Iono stares blankly.

“That’s the gym leader? Lol lmao”
“buddy I bet she could kick your ass any day”
“Kind of a weirdo, though. All that obsession with the ghosts…”
“Wait, I think I heard of this. There was some sort of… incident? Something happened with a Pokemon on Three Island. I think it killed a child, or something?”
“more like cursed forest”
“I no longer want Iono to step on me”
“TRAITOR TO THE CAUSE”

While her chat goes wild over the woman, Iono crosses her arms. “Hide and seek. That’s your challenge, huh? A bit of a downgrade over breaking a hole in rock with my hands or climbing up Cape Brink, don’t you think?

Buuut… if you don’t mind getting your shit absolutely WRECKED hide and seek wise live and on the air… yours truly, Iono Dollar, is ready to go!”

"You'll be the one begging to leave in front of your audience," the woman - Lostelle - replies, puffing out her cheeks. "Lost, confused, alone, but don't worry. We'll save you, and all it'll cost you is one soul! We'll even let this little one run amok with us," she walks up to Rotom, sticking her hand underneath the electrical ghost, letting her hand tingle under its influence.

"You'll have until the sun sets and true darkness falls in the Berry Forest. Once night comes, and we're free to play however we want, you're ours. Either find where little Lostelle has hidden herself away in the forest before night comes, become one of us in these woods, or cry out for help whenever you want to leave, okay? We take care of any screaming, lost little scared children in these woods, just like you."

"If," she continues, backing away, fading into the shadows of the forest, "you find me… we might just give you… a gym battle." A shadow falls from above, completely obscuring her just before she disappears into the trees. "And if you don't… There's room in the dark… here with us… just for you…"

“Hey, wait a-” And so, with a sudden woosh, Iono finds herself alone. More alone than usual, in fact, as there’s a sudden glitch on her screen. “Hey, chat, what are you…

…Chat?”

Though the chat is still able to see and hear Iono, Iono has been cut off on her end, leaving her totally chatless! She gulps, sweating desperately. “...Okay. Okay! No chat. NO PROBLEM. I’ve got 99 problems and not having chat isn’t one! Right. Let’s make this happpeeeeeen!” Deciding the best way to start is a bullheaded charge, Iono begins to just run in a straight line, ready to turn only if she runs out of road!

Alas! It doesn't take long for Iono to run out of road, or, well, to run out of a straight stretch of road, at least. She makes a little headway, breezing past the rustling leaves and the chattering throughout the forest, but she quickly encounters a dense cluster of trees, turning her path forward into a fork in the road. Which way to go? At first glance, there's little to distinguish the two paths before her. One has a row of trees all marked by a gash, and the other has seemingly blemish-free trees, but it's difficult to see far down either one. Down the former path, the marked trees to the left, a faint child-like giggling rings out from somewhere, while from the right emanates a reverberating moan.

At first, Iono decides that the giggle is clearly too obvious, and that there’s no way it could possibly be that. Deciding to follow the branch in the road, she starts to walk down the right… only for the loud moan to spook her. Shivering, Iono decides to avoid it, and steers to the left instead. Is there even any way to tell how late it is here?

"common iono w"
"that's our girl"
"wait some1 xplain pls, coudn't see :("
"the stump on the left was a whimpering phantump"
"anyone think she's actually dead?"
"wait wait what's she doing"
"ioNO"
"iono don't turn back!"

Iono proceeds blindly onwards, but her chat has a privileged view, a view from which they can more clearly see what lies in wait on the paths ahead. No amount of furious typing helps them actually connect with Iono again, the Iono Zone's devoted followers now without a mouth even as they try to scream out warnings for their idol. On the bright side, a few dedicated fans practically spam superchats in the hopes that they'll somehow reach Iono over regular messages.

As, unbeknownst to Iono, the low-dollar donations pour in, the streamer treads further down the path. Not only does she seem to get closer to the source of the giggling, it seems to come closer to her, approaching far too fast for the rate she's going.

Right on top of her, surrounding her again, the giggling comes from every direction and morphs into a sniffling, sniveling cry, sounding awfully like a child holding back a stream of tears. A figure darts between the trees nearest Iono, and a voice rings out as the figure hunkers down behind one of the trees, practically clinging to it.

"Aw, no fair! No faaaair! You should've fallen for it! You should've gone the other way!"

“...HaHA!” Iono says, putting on a brave face to cover up the fact that her heart is still beating a mile a minute. “Waaatch me, chat! This is the power of the Iono Zone! Iono Hype Squad, cheer me on!

Becaaause, you’re IT-” Iono says as she brings down her hand on the figure’s shoulder.

"IIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTT!" A piercing cry rattles the woods. Something launches itself at Iono, sending the woman stumbling back into a tree. As she collides with it, the figure slams into her, slinking down along with her…

…and weeping, breaking out into tears and rocking itself back and forth, Iono getting her wits about her and recognizing the figure as a Phantump, its quivering crying sounding suspiciously human. The frightened Ghost-type fades away, disappearing and leaving Iono to herself…

…with only Lostelle's voice, calling out somewhere in the distance. "Uh oh! You didn't lose track of where you are, did you? Oh well! You'll just have to wander around all lost now!"

“WHAT THE FUCK-” Iono screams as the Phantump hurls itself at her. She lies on the ground, rolling for a while until she finally recovers. Gasping for breath, she stares up at the canopy of Berry Forest as Lostelle mocks her.

Then she sits up. “Okay! Okay. She’s not done yet. Neither am I! Now, let’s see. My innate sense of direction tells me… this way is east!” Iono says, pointing to a direction and walking.

"where's she going??"
"what direction is that"
"relax ionochads, we can geolocate her"
"what"
"do u no wat that means or u makin things up?"
"i don't"

Confidently, Iono marches towards what is actually the northwest! The same murmuring of the forest follows her as she progresses, sometimes growing riled up, sometimes settling down into a nearly-inaudible chattering. Now and again, a chill runs down the streamer's spine, a wispy mass of chilled air brushing past her.
Is the path curving, or does it just seem to be curving? She'd been going straight this whole time, so she had to still be going east, right? Unless the lines of trees had been curving so gradually she hadn't noticed…

Huh?

A sudden flash gets Iono's attention. Seeing nothing ahead of her, the streamer looks back the way she had come, only to see a pair of lights drifting lazily through the forest. Another flash from behind briefly illuminates the trees, prompting the streamer to turn once again. Now, further down the path, a third light drifts about. The illumination both sets of distant lights provide proves there's no good side branches to take, leaving Iono with a choice - either press forward "east" or turn back.

This time around, Iono knows that there’s something suspicious going on. But she also knows how to try and handle it. If she were to just overload the area with Rotom, that would probably be too suspicious. Instead, with a motion, her two hairclips detach from her head, and they slowly begin to float away. One of them moves towards each of the two directions… and Iono watches, turning around and around.

As she views, the one that reaches the two lights behind her just floats on past that, totally untouched. However, the one moving forward gets suddenly struck by a force, bouncing back and the little Magnemite eye tearing up. Iono quickly recalls it, and begins to walk back towards the two lights, trusting in that route to take her a better direction.

Ahead of - or, rather, behind, now, with streamer turning back the way she had come - Iono, a rattling sneer accompanies the disappearance of a Duskull taken very much aback by Iono's hairclip. Giving up on luring the streamer away, the Ghost-type Pokémon leaves her to her doubling back and following the pair of lights guiding her away…

…which turn out to belong to a Pumpkaboo, Iono discovers. The little pumpkin Pokémon pays Iono surprisingly little heed, drifting on its merry way as she follows behind at a distance. It never strays too far from her, though it does take her on twisting, winding paths through the forest. The murmuring of spirits quiets, as even the ghosts - apparently - fall silent. Fewer shadows weave through the trees, as if deterred by Pumpkaboo's light. Following the pumpkin, Iono makes steady progress - or what she thinks is progress, at least - with her chat following along from home, commenting on the spooks lurking just outside of her field of vision.

Pumpkaboo takes her some ways, but, as if Iono were Cinderella at the stroke of midnight, she eventually loses her guide, Pumpkaboo's lights going dim, and the Pokémon drifting beyond a narrow gap in the trees, out of sight. Looking around, Iono finds herself at what could almost - emphasis on almost - pass for a clearing in the woods, still lacking any visible sky, but open enough to traverse reasonably. Some grasses manage to grow tall within, and… something moves through the grasses, steadily creeping towards the edge of the patch, staying hidden through the blades.

Approaching the clearing, Iono stumbles in, starting to walk through the place - only to stop short. Waaait a second. This… feels wrong. It’s not logical reasoning this time, or even the commands of chat, but just a sheer gut instinct. Iono begins to shuffle around the edge of the clearing, feeling like if she just charges through something will go wrong here. Is there an exit? There’s gotta be one.

Nope! Try as Iono might to find an exit, there's no good gap between the trees to squeeze through, save for turning back the way she came. Not to what she supposes to be the north, nor in any other direction. Someone should've posted one of those "no exit" signs on the path to this clearing, is all Iono can conclude as the rustling in the grass becomes louder, more frantic.

Until, that is, Iono, her eyes well-adjusted to the lack of light at this point, spots something odd about one of the trees to the north. There's no gap between them, but there is a hole in one of the trees, carved into its base. It looks almost, just barely large enough for someone to crawl through…

Oh jeez. It’s gonna be a tight fit, huh? She can already hear all the jokes chat would gleefully make at seeing her shove herself into that. But not much of a choice here, able to tell that the clearing is not a safe place. Shoving herself in, kicking her legs, Iono begins to force herself straight through and into the tree. Where does she end up?

She winds up emerging back on another narrow path in the woods, though this one, at least, diverges into a number of routes. Four paths lie ahead of Iono, two forking off to the left, two forking off to the right, and there's surprisingly little activity on any of them - certainly none of the strange happenings she had encountered until now. The trees all look to be about the same height. There's no particularly apparent difference between any of them. Even the paths themselves are devoid of distinct identifying characteristics. All there is of note are what look to be three oversized cicada shells - or, no, definitely not normal cicada shells, but rather unmoving Shedninja - clinging onto the tree through which she just crawled.

Looking at the shells, Iono tries to figure out if there’s any connection between them and the paths. She nods as she figures something out - clearly, the three shells are pointing to which paths to not take! Confidently, Iono struts down the remaining path, happy to have figured it out.

Maybe half an hour later she walks in and looks around, realizing this path led her in a circle. “Oh come on!” Iono shouts, flailing her sleeves. “What kind of messed-up forest is this?” She starts to study the shells again, trying to see if she can figure out what they REALLY mean.

They've barely moved, or perhaps they've not even moved at all. It's hard to tell. The three shells don't seem to have any particular connection to the paths. It's just one above the others, to the left, a second below that one, a little to the right of it, and one more even lower and even further to the right. The third one, actually, seems to be about at eye level… Was it always there, or had it shifted down? Maybe she should have taken a picture… What a shame that her chat wasn't with her to tell her…

"THAT ONE'S LOWER"
"IONO LOOK AT THAT ONE"
"they weren't arranged like that before"
"sending brainpower to iono"
"think think think!"

Chat screams in vain, their words unable to reach Iono. There's nothing they can do. They must trust in Iono. Oblivious to chat's plight, Iono inspects the shells more closely, finding nothing strange about any given one of them, but....

If they weren't showing her which path not to take, they had to be showing her which path to take, right? So was she supposed to take the first path on the left, because the highest shell was to the left? Or was she supposed to take the third path from the left, because there were three shells, and they were descending from left to right? She tries to peer through the canopy to get a sense of the time, but her efforts are in vain. There's only a sliver of light peeking through the leaves, and it's too difficult to tell whether it's from an afternoon sun or an evening sun. Still, she couldn't have been here all that long, right? So even if this was a 50-50 guess, she'd be fine!

Deciding to take her chances, Iono marches down the third path from the left, taking the gamble and… after a brisk walk down the tight path, she comes across a tree rising above the others, a tree with a little nook underneath it, just shaded enough that she can't see if anything is inside… There's no activity. It's dead silence from the nook. Well, if it were a trick of some kind, there'd probably be something trying to lure her in, right…?

Cautiously, Iono approaches the nook, getting on her knees, crawling towards it with some trepidation. She pokes her head in.

"BOO!"

There's a thud as something smacks into wood, something inside the nook jumping up in response. Iono straightens up and backs away, standing triumphantly. At her feet, muttering and grumbling, rubbing the back of her head, Lostelle reluctantly crawls out.

"I guess you found me," she concedes as she gets up on her feet, looking none too happy about the outcome. "I don't see how it's unfair if Gengar jumps out of the grass just because nobody comes near it," she mutters to herself, turning away from Iono. "Since you found me, I have to give you a battle. Are you ready?"

“Hahahahahaha! Of course I did!” Iono elects to graciously not mention that she was pretty close to cracking at one point. She looks around, a bit surprised to see that the forest seems a little less constricting - Berry Forest is still a dark, spooky wood, but the light from the evening sun is now shining clearly down, and the shadows seem to stay where they are.

Even the connection errors she had suddenly clear up, chat’s words coming loud and clear through the connection. “Hiiii, chat! I can hear you again - and thanks for the sweet, sweet superchats! I highly recommend you giving me money any time I can’t hear you. You know. Just in case.”

“OUR GAAAAAL”
“that’s our iono, confirmed not replaced”
“Please let me talk to Lostelle”
“silence, traitor”

“Right!” Iono says, producing one of her Poke Balls. “I’ve got my chat back and I’ve got you locked down. If it’s a battle you want, it’s a battle you’ll get!”

"Alright, then get ready! You came all the way into the home of spirits, and you're about to learn why everyone says you should fear the spirits in the Berry Forest! I'm the most frightening thing to ever come out of these woods!"

Putting aside the sting of Iono spooking her, Lostelle grabs a Dusk Ball and calls for a Banette, the spiteful doll emerging and awaiting its opponent. Iono counters by tossing out Rotom, and the gym battle is joined!

Banette vs Rotom, ghost vs ghost, it didn't get much riskier than this. Out front at the start of the lineup like this, Rotom could do some serious damage to Lostelle's team… but it could take some serious damage from its fellow spirits all the same.

So they'd have to strike fast, and get the jump on Banette!

Using its speed to full effect, Rotom kicks off the battle by rising up into the air, just beneath the canopy, and firing off a Shock Wave! The electrical pulse spreads across the woods, crackling as it collides with the trees, the ring of electricity breaking into arcing segments. Banette stands its ground as the pulse rushes outwards, backed into a corner. Turning and running couldn't get it away quickly enough, and with the attack sweeping outwards, hunkering down somewhere to minimize its effects is out of the question.

The pulse reaches Banette before the ghostly doll can take a step… only to pass over Banette harmlessly, the doll hiding itself in the shadows shifting across the forest floor with Shadow Sneak. Banette slinks across the ground as Rotom, suddenly on the defensive, desperately covers the area in a veil of twisting, swirling color, projecting an enlarged shade of itself as it tries to stave off an attack with Night Shade.

Banette bursts forth from the shadows, leaping at Rotom! The Night Shade takes effect, the phantasmal Rotom rushing at Banette, enveloping it and forcing it back, leaving it shuddering and on the backfoot as Rotom's psychedelic projections evaporate.

"she scared a ghost!"
"ez counter"
"always knew she could scare anyone w/ her chompers"
"anyone else missing their dolls now?"
"don't need to. over 30 and still got plushies"

Commanding the momentum, Rotom goes in for the metaphorical kill, firing off a Shadow Ball. The spiraling ball of energy hurtles towards Banette, the doll Pokémon once again standing its ground, no chance of escaping this one. The sound of the collision thunders through the interior of the woods, the Shadow Ball exploding on impact with Banette, obscuring the doll from view.

"BOO!"

Even as the explosion shakes the old-growth trees of the deep forest interior, Lostelle shouts out… and in time with Banette, no less, her Pokémon suddenly rising up in front of Rotom, unzipping its mouth and lunging forward, shoving Rotom back with an Astonish. Though a ghost itself, Rotom flinches, giving Banette, a chance to deliver Rotom a hard smack. Knock Off does the trick, sending the plasma Pokémon plunging down to the forest floor, its frail constitution doing it no favors.

"You can always give up if you're scared!" Lostelle calls out with an oddly chipper smugness, tossing a seemingly-friendly wave at Iono while nevertheless sporting a vicious grin.

Not even close to giving in, Iono defiantly sends out Bellibolt. The frog and the doll stare each other down, sizing each other up from a distance. Banette slouches, crouches down, even. It's tired and weakened, Iono realizes. Bellibolt might be able to get the first move, but… even weakened, would Banette be too quick? Being able to dive into the shadows to avoid attacks gave it a great advantage. To knock out Banette, they'd have to do something about that.

"Okay, my ribbit-y buddy," Iono calls out! "Our loyal Iono Zone viewers need a better view! Cue the lights for me, okay?"

Bellibolt's electricity crackles to life, the frog charging up as Banette primes itself to attack, quietly preparing a Sucker Punch. Bellibolt fires off a blast of electricity, and Banette rushes forward, arm wound back for a power-packed punch!

Then Banette stumbles, falling flat on its face as the forest begins to glow, suffused with a soft yellow-blue glow. Sucker Punch let Banette respond quickly to attacks, but this wasn't an attack; Bellibolt had merely used Electric Terrain. The electricity arcing through the trees and sparking along the ground illuminates the Berry Forest, driving back the shadows.

When the Zap Cannon comes, Banette is a sitting duck. Another explosion of energy rocks the forest, with a bolt of electricity escaping from the epicenter and breaching the canopy, briefly snaking up into the skies above the child island. Banette slumps to the ground in the aftermath, Lostelle forced to recall the Pokémon.

"You're almost as bad as those guys who bring Flash," Lostelle grumbles, crossing her arms and puffing out her cheeks again. "Fine! We'll have to drag you into the darkness with us this time! I'll show you what it's like to be taken away to somewhere dark and lonely!"

In Banette's place, out comes Drifblim! The balloon Pokémon wastes no time getting into the battle, matching Bellibolt's battlefield manipulation with some of its own by setting up a Tailwind. A gale blows through the trees, howling as it twists through branches and whooshes around trunks. Bellibolt's Thunderbolt streaks through the forest, forcing Drifblim to take evasive maneuvers - something which the balloon Pokémon does with ease, riding its summoned Tailwind to zoom through the air.

Circling around Bellibolt, Drifblim launches a Shadow Ball that strikes the frog square in the center of its back, toppling it. Though the frog scrambles to right itself, Drifblim presses its advantage, continuing to circle the frog and pelting it with a barrage of Air Slash attacks, cutting blades formed from the air itself slicing into the downed Bellibolt.

Try as it might, flail around as it might, the frog can't push itself up to its feet, Drifblim's relentless attacks giving it no room to rise. Bellibolt in a bind, Iono in a bind, the streamer's mind races. Options, what options did they have? Zap Cannon would be a surefire hit, and one boosted by Electric Terrain, but getting it off amidst Drifblim's barrage would be next to impossible. Discharge would be just as difficult to get off, and switching out Bellibolt, well, it'd be marginally better than letting Bellibolt get KOed here, but getting Bellibolt back into battle would be a challenge. Weakened as it would be, it'd have next to no chance to get back into battle without taking an immediate KO blow…

So they'd just have to hit Drifblim with a parting shot! "Okays! We're gonna have a new guest on the stream now, so give me a Volt Switch, Beillbolt buddy!"

Still stuck on the ground, only having managed to flip over from being stuck on its belly to lying on its back, Bellibolt cloaks itself in a crackling ball of electricity. A bolt lashes out from the ball of electricity to strike Drifblim, an electrical surge overwhelming Lostelle's Pokémon as Bellibolt returns to Iono.

With Bellibolt retreating, out comes Magneton, the magnet Pokémon facing a stunned Drifblim and making the most of the situation by immediately firing off a terrain-boosted Thunderbolt. Volt after volt pours into Drifblim, until the Pokémon is only lazily drifting a couple inches off the ground by the time Magneton finally breaks off the attack. One more little push, that's all it's going to take.

"finish him"
"finish him.gif"
"she's got it"
"finish him"

Iono's viewers flood her chat with the same memetic line like it's the replies section of a popular Tweet, and Lostelle, clearly on the defensive now… grins and nods as Drifblim looks back. The balloon Pokémon lets out a weak croon. Rapidly inflating, Drifblim begins to glow, growing brighter until it surpasses even the Electric Terrain when it comes to casting a light.

The explosion comes swiftly, not, this time, courtesy of any energetic attacks, but from Drifblim itself, using the aptly named Explosion technique. Trees shudder, even Iono and Lostelle have to dig their heels in and shield their eyes, and Magneton is consumed by the blast.

When the smoke clears, Driflbim, naturally, lies on the ground, deflated. Magneton, its metallic body singed and scuffed, still floats.

Holding tough through the force of the explosion, its metal body acting as the armor it needed to tough out the explosion, Magneton may look worse for wear, but still it floats, still hanging on in battle.

"If you won't come with us willingly," Lostelle pouts, clenching her fists and scrunching her face, "then we'll trap you in a nightmare and take you away! I'm going to teach you how terrifying it can be to be hypnotized!"

With those words, Lostelle chucks a Dusk Ball. The light of the ball fades away to reveal nothing but a wide, toothy grin floating in the woods and a pair of shifty red eyes above it. The rest of the Pokémon's body fades in, Gengar stepping up to battle properly.

“Ah”. That’s all that comes from Iono at first, as she processes the final Pokemon she’s up against. Thankfully, there was no sign of Mega Evolution or Dynamax to worry about here, but boy is this an uncomfortable showdown. Gengar’s one of the toughest ghost Pokemon around, and Iono is on the back foot here! Deciding there’s nothing to do but go for the quick strikes, Iono opens hard, aiming for Gengar with a Flash Cannon. If it worked once, it might work again, right?

It's a good opening move on Iono's part! Unfortunately, it's not quite good enough. As the beam races towards Gengar, the Ghost-type simply vanishes, the beam harmlessly passing through the air where it had been. From behind Magneton, Gengar strikes, reappearing as suddenly as it had disappeared, striking Magneton with a full-bodied tackle as it completes its Phantom Force attack. There's but one saving grace for Magneton, that being that Gengar isn't so tough when it comes to physical force, lacking the mass it really needs to make its tackle a hard one.

Not letting up, Gengar follows up with a Shadow Ball, aiming the classic Ghost-type attack Magneton's way while the magnet Pokémon is recovering from the surprise from behind. That one only clips Magneton, the tripartite Pokemon aware enough to recover in time to avoid a direct blow. Still, though, Iono has been placed firmly on the defensive now, and she’s trying hard to figure out what direction to salvage this with. Eventually, she settles on an idea.

“Alright, time for… Thunder Wave!” Yes, just Thunder Wave. It doesn’t pack the damaging power of the other electric moves, but it has a very useful effect - and if Gengar is paralyzed, Iono can start to lay on the smackdown by following up with Thunderbolt properly!

Now that's strategy, Iono! The Thunder Wave finds its mark, Gengar seizing up as the little surge of electricity overtakes it. As the move fades away, Gengar seemingly shrugs it off, unconcerned, and draws back for a Payback attack.

That's when it realizes there's a problem. It charges towards Magneton, ready to punish it with the retaliatory move, but it's moving far too slow, and now it's right in the path of Magneton, and easy target…

Iono knows this next move is gonna be risky, but at the same time… what’s she got to lose? Magneton’s already low on HP, and she’s gotta take the risk to avoid the risk of Gengar knocking it out. She grins.

“ohhhh here it comes”
“THAT’S HER TELL”
“Big finish time!”

“Steel Beam!” Iono shouts, Magneton twirling all its magnets as it focuses… and unleashes a huge, powerful blast of pure steel energy, drawing on its own health and burning it up for sheer, raw power!

That is far from good, for Lostelle, and she knows it, but the Gym Leader maintains her composure. She even grins. This is where it gets exciting. This is where she pulls out her trump card.

"Gengar! Put it to sleep and snack on its nightmares!"

Dutifully compliant, and all-too-eager to plunge Magneton into sleep, Gengar complies, opening its eyes wide and shooting a piercing gaze at Magneton as it fires off its Steel Beam, looking to blunt the attack.

Magneton would fall into a deep sleep before it could finish its attack, giving Gengar a chance to regroup, and Dream Eater would give it a chance to heal up, too. She'd finish off Magneton, and finishing Bellibolt would be a piece of cake!

Or so Lostelle thinks, right up until the moment Gengar gets sent hurtling past her, swept into the air by Magneton's Steel Beam. Not even getting a chance to turn incorporeal, Gengar slams into a tree, slumping to the ground.

"Wha-?" Lostelle looks from the defeated Gengar to Magneton, stunned by the result. There, before her, Magneton remained awake, still hanging on. "I know Magneton can be put to sleep! It doesn't have Insomnia! It doesn't have Vital Spirit! What was that? What did you do?"

“...Wow, you don’t actually know?” Iono looks genuinely astounded. “Electric Terrain! Not only does it boost electric moves… it means nobody in battle can fall asleep, at any time, as long as the terrain’s up! Defeated by the superior tactics of the Iono Zone!”

Lostelle looks skeptical, tilting her head at Iono's explanation, looking between, once again, her defeated Pokémon and the victorious Magneton, floating above the still-sparking ground. "I've never had someone use it against me like that," she eventually begrudgingly admits. "People bring all kinds of strategies to avoid falling for Hypnosis, but there's even a way to avoid it by changing the terrain…"

After contemplating the revelation for a moment, she sighs, recalling Gengar. "Fine. You win." She rummages around for a badge to grant to Iono, eventually pulling out what looks like a stylized tree trunk with, rather than leaves fanning out from it, a will-o'-the-wisp atop it.

"You were brave enough to face the ghosts in the forest, and you kept your courage through our whole game, so take this Spirit Badge as a reminder of the horror of Lostelle of the Berry Forest!"

“HELL YEAH!” Iono says, grabbing up the badge and holding it dramatically before pinning it next to the other two. “Three down! Four to go!” Chat starts eagerly celebrating, Iono looking it over and mugging for the camera as she basks in her victory over yet another Gym Leader.

As she does, one of the discussions makes her perk up. “Hey, is it true a Pokemon killed a kid in this forest?”

Iono celebrates, and Lostelle's mind races with questions. What else didn't she know about terrain effects yet? Who would know the most about the- Wait. What a dumb question. It'd be Ultima. Of course it'd be Ultima. Except Electric Terrain, maybe. He might actually know more about that. She'd have to go all the way over to-

Wait. Did Iono say she had nabbed three badges?

That mention is enough to get Lostelle out of her own head, but it's Iono's next question actually draws Lostelle's attention back to her challenger. With a mischievous gleam in her eyes, she quickly scans her surroundings, as if checking for anyone listening before spilling a secret. A Duskull waiting nearby, one of the hidden audience members for the battle, drifts over to Iono. "You want to know about that?" Lostelle questions, her voice a hushed whisper.

Iono's chat goes dark, her viewers unable to see a thing until the screen flashes back to life, filled with static, the audio and video distorted.

And as soon as chat has their view interrupted, Lostelle drops the horrified act, clasping her hands together and pleading with Iono. "Please tell me that's the story they're sharing online! Please! That's not what happened, but it's better than the actual story!" Overflowing with excitement, Lostelle spins around, gesturing for Pumpkaboo and Phantump to emerge. The two Pokémon act out the story as she tells it. "When I was still little," she says as Phantump wanders around like a frightened child, only for Pumpkaboo to approach, inviting it to come along, "I was at the edge of the forest. A Hypno came out, and I followed it deep into the woods. Someone came and got me, and then the Hypno was tracked down, and that's all that happened."

"It's boring, right? It's not even worth telling. So pretty please, keep the real story a secret from your fans. You'll do that for me, won't you? I'll even pay you back someday. You can have a front row ticket when I'm in the championship match at the PWT!"

“Oh. Wow, that’s… huh.” Iono actually looks taken aback at both Lostelle’s sudden change of tone, and at how anticlimactic the story was. “Yeah! There’s all sorts of horror stories chat is talking about how Berry Forest is a cursed place because a child died here, and that’s why it’s haunted.

…Wait, if that’s not it, then are all the ghosts yours?”

However, the mention of a dramatic story gets Iono’s interest. “Welllllll, it WILL get chat a lot more fun clips and hype… okay, okay!” With that, Iono signals to Lostelle, and chat begins to come back into focus… with Iono clamping her hands over her mouth. “That’s horrible! It’s the scariest thing I ever heard!”

Mouthing a silent "thank you" to Iono, the Ghost-type using Gym Leader plays her part, both as a storyteller and as a member of the Sevii League. "Aaaaand, you get to hear the whole story because you beat all three of the Tri-Pass gyms. If anyone watching you wants the true story, they should come and battle us, too."

Her overt plug finished, Lostelle picks up with commendations she, strictly speaking, was supposed to give challengers like Iono as she awarded their badge. "You've proven that you're brave, that you're strong, and that you have incredible endurance. Congratulations, chall- Iono. You're someone who could make it on our islands, even far outside of town, and the Sevii League hopes you'll always look at your three badges as reminders of your experiences in the Sevii Islands."

It's a little speech that's stiff at times, clearly a mixture of rehearsed words and some ad-libbing, but Lostelle's next comment is completely natural. "But you better not stop here! There's still four gyms waiting for you, with more challenges and more battles, and we're going to beat you!" Knowing she's on camera, she stops short of actually criticizing aloud the many challengers who had stopped after just three islands, even as a cheer of support for Iono rises through the forest, the gaggle of Ghost-types watching the battle offering their own encouragement to the streamer.

“Oh, you don’t need to worry about that!” Iono says, smirking. “I’ve already got my Rainbow Pass lined up. I don’t even know what’s on Four Island, but I know it’s gonna be no match for me!”

Chat erupts into cheers once again.

“FULL ISLANDS HERE WE COME”
“I knew Iono wasn’t going to be one of those tourists who gives up after the Tri-Pass!”
“I still need Lostelle to step on me”
“Did you know a Rainbow Pass barely costs more than a Tri-Pass? I thought that was interesting.”

"If you want that," Lostelle, now making her appeals not just to Iono, but directly to her audience as well, catches sight of a few of the comments in Iono's chat, "come out to Kin Island and wander into the Berry Forest. You can be just like Iono and get on your hands and knees. You can find what you're looking for here," she replies, deliberately keeping her response at least somewhat open-ended. "Come soon, and you can even meet your idol while Iono's still battling through the gyms," she ends off with a metaphorical nudge and a wink.

"So, do you want us spirits to guide you out of the forest so you can challenge the full Rainbow Pass?" She questions Iono, still trying to play up Iono's guaranteed future battles to keep the streamer's audience excited.

“You know what? Sure! Let’s see what you’ve got in that regard!” Iono says with a grin, as she begins to follow Lostelle and her ghosts out of the forest. “A forest, a cliff, and a spa… it’ll be interesting to see what’s next.

Let’s do this, chat! We’ve got a badge challenge to win!”

An Atypical Typical Meeting

Floe Island, Sevii Defense Forces Main Base

"So. Only the three of us?"

Mercifully, light streams into the room, providing some much needed vibrancy that the conference table dominating the space cannot. There had never been a time when sitting in here hadn't felt stifling, but at least it didn't shut out the sunlight like a coffin; those higher security rooms buried deeper in the building might as well have been prison cells.

"Um," Celio ventures, "Jaclyn still intends to be here. I think. I haven't heard from her, but she never said she wasn't coming."

"I don't doubt that she meant to come here." Seated at the head of the table, alert and attentive, Rochelle cuts a rather commanding figure when compared to the scrawny nerd to her left, his face half-buried in a laptop even now. "But she'll mean to go home, and spend an hour flagging down a Seagallop because she tried skipping a five minute walk." Her comment earns a half-shrug of resignation, half-nod of agreement from Celio.

"If she has something to report, she can barge in on me anytime." Her nails tap against the table as she looks over her shoulder to check the clock ticking on behind her. "Meetings," she shakes her head. "There's too many. Who went and convinced the whole world you can't say anything until some pencil-pusher puts draws X on a calendar…?"

"My calendar has enough on it without this meeting running over its allotted time." Enter Gideon, butting into the conversation with a huff, arms crossed in a petulant fashion as he, too, looks towards the clock.

"Fine, fine." Taking up a folder in her hands, Rochelle kicks off the proceedings properly, casting a final half-hearted glance around the room to make sure the doors and window are shut. "You know what we're here for by now. I'm not bothering with this whole agenda business."

"Following a suggestion by Officer Davies," she begins immediately, "we dropped buoys in the waters around each of the chambers. Tracked them three days. Couple almost made it four. In under 96 hours, the seas swept away every one of them. No sealed transmitter or black box could still be drifting around the chambers three weeks on."

She tilts her paper down, peering over its edge at the two men before her. Clicking and clacking fill in the silence like water rushing into a vacuum, Celio furiously typing away while Gideon merely looks over a folder's worth of notes of his own.

"Great. Very productive discussion." She sighs. "We just couldn't operate without these interpersonal collaborative sessions." No amount of apologetic wincing from Celio can temper her exasperation, but onwards she continues anyways, letting the paper slide from her hands entirely. "Another full search of the chambers and surrounding islets turned up a whole wad of seagrass and not a bit more. We're running out of explanations. You boys brought any to share with us?"

"Consistent with the period ranging from the 3rd of April to the 10th of April, there have been no observations of atmospheric phenomena this week." Gideon jumps in without hesitation, drowning out Celio's timid squeaking. "The results of ongoing environmental monitoring within the chambers themselves have proven more… intriguing. Anomalous temperature swings, repeated shifts in local gravity measurements, clocks desynchronizing, unexplained variation in humidity measurements… Fufufufu…"

"Will you be reporting your conclusions soon, Mr. Science, or are you considering a new career in acting?"

"An extraordinary hypothesis requires extraordinary observations! I will not present my results without the gravitas they're due!"

"Why don't you worry about when they're due - now - over what they're due?"

"I have reason to suggest," he begins again, choosing to yield to Rochelle's demand as he slides sheets of data across the table to her, "that the Tanoby Chambers house localized dimensional anomalies!"

Jumping from his chair and slamming his hands on the table earns Gideon not a standing ovation, but blank stares and silence. Rochelle merely coughs as she waits for him to continue before she cuts out the middleman and begins perusing his tables and reports.

"That's… great, isn't it?" Celio's quizzical tilt of his head belies his feigned excitement. Questions arise more from sympathy than from an understanding of the significance of the findings. "That could explain the signal. It's leaking through… from… another dimension?" Huh. Suddenly, this news felt more concerning than encouraging…

"If we're picking up on an extra-dimensional S.O.S., there's going to be trouble." Concurring with Celio's unvoiced fears, Rochelle rises up out of her own chair, leaving Gideon to grumble and sit back down as she begins pacing. "It's going to be hell asking procurement to find equipment rated for 6D space."

A pity chuckle from Celio. Really? That's it? Kids these days… Ultima would have cracked up at that one.

"Is the signal coming from another dimension?" She drops the levity quickly, chilling and hardening her tone.

"I've made no such claim. I can only posit that it's possible the signal is coming from another dimension. It remains possible that the signal is coming from our dimension and we haven't elucidated its cause or the mechanism of its movement."

"How do we get from 'possible' to 'yes or no'?"

"Additional equipment. I'll-"

"We'll."

"Fine, yes. We'll need equipment able to take direct measurements of interactions between dimensions and non-relativistic space-time distortions."

"As… multi-talented… as you are, Gideon, we'll need… outside experts. We can't justify that expense without a specialist who can train our boys on the tech." The words flow as smoothly from Rochelle's mouth as does butter plucked from a freezer - barely, and only with coaxing.

"Oh, experts on multiple dimensions?" Celio's head shoots up and his fingers fly, the tech specialist punching in a few keystrokes and turning his laptop towards Rochelle with a handful of articles displayed. "We could try contacting the Planeswardens. I've been reading about them and the work they do is amaziii-" He trails off, dialing back his excitement as he catches himself launching into rambling exaltations. "...They usually focus on large interdimensional threats, but maybe they could spare some equipment and a specialist, since it's possible someone, somewhere, is in distress."

Spending half a minute leaning forward to squint at a screen and read headlines proves quite uninformative! "It's better than going off of nothing," Rochelle concedes aloud after letting Celio spin his computer back around, giving up on gleaning anything right this second. "Send me any contact informat-"

THUD

Someone throws one of the doors open. All three meeting attendees snap to attention, whirling around to catch sight of the sudden interloper.

"Li-Listen… Lo… Long story, but…" In stumbles a woman, drenched in sweat and gasping for a breath. "...the chambers… the island… They're…" She doubles over, resting her hands on her knees after flashing up a finger to request a moment. Whatever had left her overheating, her coat does her no favors as she tries to cool down.

"Gods' sake, Jaclyn! You take a scenic hike down Mt. Ember!?" As Jaclyn tries to cool off, Rochelle rushes to her side, making sure she doesn't collapse before shooting a look at the two men in the room. "You boys! Get her in a chair! One of you, get fanning! I've got water!" Rochelle's orders prompt a response, Celio scrambling to Jaclyn's side as Gideon searches for anything suitable for use as a fan other than his folder.

xxx

A few minutes later, Jaclyn re-enters the meeting room, this time trailed by a Slowbro dutifully spritzing her with an Icy Wind mist as she fans herself, an empty water bottle in her hands. Inside, a discussion of history unfolds, Rochelle and Celio huddled around the latter's laptop while Gideon stands off to the side, tapping his foot.

"And this one is?"

"This is from the library's archives. I'm… They asked if someone could help set up a system for digitizing and tagging their records, so, there's not a publicly searchable digital database yet, but…" The computer specialist points at his screen. "See? It's a third, or, first, maybe, really, report of an aurora over Quest, and the description makes it sound pretty similar to the one we saw."

"What we observed was an 'atmospheric phenomenon', Gideon corrects. "Its appearance was consistent with an aurora, but unless we find evidence that magnetic activity caused it, it's irresponsible to use that term. You're creating a false impression that you know the cause."

"So we have three reports of aurorae over time." Rochelle glances up at the returning Jaclyn, signaling for the woman to join the meeting - which had, indeed, run far over its allotted time - properly. "March 20th to March 24th, this year…"

"May 31st of 2016," Gideon adds in, having finished his grumbling.

"And, according to this, about twenty years and one month before that," Celio finishes off, leaving Rochelle to pace about, bowing her head as she considers the significance of the reports.

"Every possible lead has to get more and more cryptic, huh? How about you," she says, nodding to Jaclyn, now comfortably seated alongside her Slowbro. "Come to tell us that Shellder have grown two percent thicker in the past week?"

"Actually," Jaclyn begins, "I- No, Actually Actually, sorry for causing a scene earlier. I couldn't take the short way here. My mind was racing. It was hard enough getting back to the chambers. I ran all the way through the canyon, then-"

"You went to the chambers today?" Rochelle succeeds in cutting Gideon off before he can interject, casting the researcher a sharp look to keep him quiet.

"I thought I'd go this morning. To see if I felt anything," she explains. "I thought I'd have enough time before the meeting if I warped from the chambers directly to the docks, but…"

"Aw, you really didn't have to rush that much for us. Everyone understands it's not something you can help. I couldn't keep my mind clear enough to do what you do."

Jaclyn shakes her head, rebuffing Celio's words. "No, it wasn't that this time. I ended up on Birth Island." The comment earns a raised brow from Rochelle as Jaclyn composes her thoughts, but nothing more. "I know it's just barely close enough, but I haven't even thought about Birth Island once this month. I know I wasn't thinking about it when I teleported. I couldn't fathom how I ended up there. But I had to get here to tell you. It didn't feel random."

"You think it's connected to…?" Rochelle gestures futilely at the entirety of the room.

"I don't know," she admits. "It's just a hunch, but my hunches are usually right, aren't they?"

"You didn't see anything out of place?"

"It was as flat and barren as ever."

The military woman sighs. "At this point, I'm not writing anything off until we poke at it. Three weeks of this," she mutters as she shakes her head, as if in disbelief. "Is that all we have this week, then?"

Not a peep from Jaclyn, Celio, Gideon, or even Slowbro. The quartet simply shake their heads, one by one, as she looks to each of them for any final comments. A typical meeting. It had gone on too long, drained everyone involved, and produced no results.

Still, there were a few leads, if tenuous ones. "Celio, stay in touch about those Planeswardens. I'll take our third aurora report to our weather girls. Jaclyn, Gideon, when your duties allow, I want to send you both to Birth Island with a search team - a search team of one, but it sounds better than saying I'm sending you with a scout. We'll pretend it's for fun. It's no less productive than searching the chambers a fourth time!"

With one final exasperated declaration, she shuffles out of the room, leaving the others to gather their things and to follow her out. Even with all of the new nuggets of information today had provided, one message plays on repeat in her head, that original broadcast, going out over the air for most of the first week of this whole affair.

Scaling the Summit (Collaboration with The Ruby Chao)

Boon Island, as residents of the Sevii Islands called the island better known as Two Island, had certainly lived up to its name. The second-smallest of the seven most well-known islands had, in spite of its size, grown into the home of the most lucrative businesses on the islands, its windfall fueled by so-called "tri-pass tourists". While One Island boasted more visitors overall, and more tourists stayed in the hotels erected on the gateway to the islands, those visitors turned to Two Island when it came time to lighten their wallets.

And who could blame them? Boon Island's smaller companion island offered tourists an amusement park recreating the archipelago's landmarks in steel and plastic, condensing the experience of traversing the islands from multiple days of excursions to a short afternoon and ornamenting it with rides and games. Not only did Boon Island, through its park, distill the islands' culture into purchasable trinkets and palatable bite-sized fun facts and daily shows, but the main island even offered a commercialized blend of exotic novelty and familiarity for tourists.

"Lava Cookies! Lava Cookies here! A volcanic treat, made fresh here by the sea!"

"These aren't made around here?"

"These? No, no. They're Devon-made specialties. But- And I promise you this- you won't find them anywhere else this far from Hoenn."

"This isn't just any old water. We collected this fresh from the water flowing over Cape Brink. It's fresher, cleaner, and cooler than drinking from a glacier directly."

"I don't know… It seems pricey, but, if it's really that good, then…"

"Get a load of this. Who charges that for a rock? Where's this seee-vaauult place, anyways?"

"Sorry, ma'am. We're out of stock already today. You'll have to try getting here early tomorrow. They sell out fast. Oh, but the ferry to the park starts running just after we open, so you won't be waiting around long."

Even today, Two Island's open-air market is abuzz. Ever the eavesdropper's paradise, all kinds of conversations and commentaries on the market's goods mingle with the scent of the sea hanging in the air. Customers snack on everything from corn dogs to sweets ranging from Shalour Sables to Skittles to Bush Cubes, buy up snowglobes and magnets, and weave in and out of tent-covered displays.

With the Joyful Game Corner, displaying shamelessly for all to see the garish yellow diamonds painted onto its walls and the flashing lights of its marquee, anchoring it on one end, and the road to the docks - and thus, to the ferries to the park and to One Island - anchoring it at the other, the market's steady stream of visitors never ran dry.

And, now, today, Iono finds herself at the edge of this market, weaving her way through the crowds as she makes tracks for the road to the mountain which dominates the island.

“Hmmm. Hmmm hmmm hmmm.” Here to adventure and explore, and find out more about who to confront for the second badge of the Sevii League, Iono looks around and listens. A fancy game corner… a ridiculously overstocked market… why, it all looked too good to be true! Her impulses urge her to run off and buy everything she wants, but she restrains herself. Not just because of impulse control - in fact, if this was a day off, she’d already be splurging.

But she has a group that she knows to tap into it.

“Alright, chat, it’s time for one of the Iono Zone’s favorite games! How overpriced is this exotic market, and what are you going to fund me to buy anyway?”

"bush cubes are supposed to be good"
"anything you want from us, queen"
"bottled water's a scam anywhere see my blog about it"
"$7.00 right now if youll buy a plush and name it after me"

"You're near the game corner?"

"new iono spending surge?"
"she can't name it after your screenname, dolt"

“Let’s see…” Taking this surprisingly seriously, Iono looks over the information - as well as the superchats she’s been sent. Grinning, Iono makes a small list, Rotom floating next to her to make it easier for her to doublecheck as she goes.

“Alright, chat, we’re off!”

And that’s why just a bit later, Iono walks out of the other side of the market, carrying an overstuffed sandwich, pocketing a plush, and munching on a Bush Cube - one of the local Sevii treats, apparently named after Pattern Bush. All the way out on farflung Six Island, with Iono even overhearing a couple people mentioning that they didn’t even know you COULD go to Six Island.

She had to raise an eyebrow at this. Tourists gonna tourist.

As she walks by the Game Corner, Iono decides to take a look at it - only to be nearly clobbered by the door as someone walks out, Iono yelping.

"Io-! Io… no…?" She hears a shout immediately, her accidental assailant panicking as he realizes what's happened. "I promise that wasn't on purpose!" Stunned by the whole affair, the young man - dressed in a teal shirt, glasses resting on the bridge of his nose - seemingly forgets that he can, indeed, let the door close now. Luckily, it only takes a moment for him to snap out of it, coming to his senses as he walks around the door to check on Iono, letting it close on its own.

"Iono! I- I'm so sorry! I'm a huge fan, actually. I'd never do that on purpose! Wait… No, that's not important right now!" Frantically reaching into his pockets, he rummages through his belongings, keys and even some kind of card falling to the ground as he finally manages to pull out a handkerchief. "Here, use…" Only after procuring the item does it begin to dawn on him that it may not be that useful. "Uhm, you can take this if you want. I should start with… Are you okay?"

Luckily, Iono isn’t actually harmed, just thrown off. As she shakes her head, confused, she has to try and keep up with the pile of awkward nerd banter - though at least the main point is reinforced by chat, with their cries of “SIMP” and “ONE OF US, ONE OF US”. Tilting her head, the first thing that comes to mind is “Wait, people watch my streams out here?”

A second later, she quickly realizes she’s gotta steal the scene. “I mean, uh. Of course they do! I’m Iono, after all! The most famous and most wonderful streamer to ever stream, and shut up chat. Nice to meet a fan in person! This is a lucky experience for you, normally my going rate is one hundred dollars!”

Iono types her next message in chat rather than saying it. “Would it be crass to ask him anyway? …Yeah, thought so.”

“Anyhow! Your idol is fine, no harm was done. What brings you out here?”

"Oh, that's great," he says, breathing a sigh of relief. Letting his shot nerves recover, he opens by pointing right over his shoulder to the building's entrance. "I had been asked if I could come and fix up a computer in the game corner. I had an emergency call come in this morning, so I rushed over. I was hoping I could finish before you started streaming today, but things didn't work out this time," he explains, punctuating his statement with a nervous chuckle.

"My name's Celio. I actually do IT work around the islands. You probably guessed that already, seeing as how I, the game corner, the story, morning, told you, the…" He trails off as he stumbles over his words, cutting the knot with a repeated "I do IT work". "Like I said before, I'm a big fan. I've not been able to watch every one of your streams, but I watch them when I can. I even saw your battle against Léan, aha. I never would have thought someone as famous as you would be challenging gym leaders here."

“Oh, you saw that? Nice!” Iono says, caught up in the normalcy of the conversation. “One down, six to go! I’ll be the first outsider to clear the Sevii League yet! Or at least, that’s what Selphy promised me. World firsts bring in ALL the fans!

And hey, keep on nerding on. If not for nerds like you, I couldn’t have my amazing streaming career to begin with!

Anyhow, you haven’t missed the good part. I still haven’t even found where I’m supposed to go - everyone I keep trying to ask is a tourist, unlike on Knot Island. It’s a lot harder to find out if I’m supposed to sneak into the amusement park or something.”

There's a flash of recognition in Celio's eyes as Iono speaks, though it quickly gets subsumed by something else, Celio lighting up as he hears Iono call Knot Island by its actual name. "You can be sure I will. I'll keep working on the network here," he says with an unusual passion, the support of an Internet idol an effective and intoxicating energy boost. "If I can make sure everyone here - everyone in the world - can see your league challenge, I'll be satisfied. Oh, and, wait. There's another way I can help you," he realizes. "The gym challenge on Boon Island starts at the base of Cape Brink, that mountain down the road from here. The gym leader here already knows to expect you. I think. She can sometimes be…"

"Well, you'll be fine," he decides to leave it at. "After all, even Selphy had full confidence in you. She sent me a message after your battle with Léan. Hold on, let me…" A few quick taps and some scrolling on his phone later, he continues. "That's it. She told me she was impressed with your determination. I think she meant generally, but also with the gym challenge specifically. Though she also said she wasn't surprised that you could handle it, so… Yeah, I think she's confident in you," he reiterates, pocketing his phone.

“Wow. You wouldn’t know it from looking at her!” Iono says, before turning around to get an eyeful of Cape Brink. “That’s… pretty tall, huh. It’s not Mt. Ember, but you’d think it would be more than a “cape”, right? Hey chat-” Iono says, only to find chat furiously engaged in debates over geographical definitions even without her. “...Beat me to it!

Alright, I should go take my second badge! Remember, like, comment, and subscribe! And, of course, keep tuning in! I’ll be looking for your generous and large donations, Celio!” Iono says, with her classic sharktooth grin.

With that, Iono departs, Celio giving her a wave to bid farewell before he turns his attention to gathering his dropped items. The road to the cape is a short one, and surprisingly devoid of interesting sights. It's nothing more than a straight shot to the base of the cape, with a few large bushes dotting the area.

When Iono arrives at the base of Cape Brink proper, she discovers that… there's nobody around, apparently! There's just a bunch of bushes, the start of the trail winding up Cape Brink, and a couple of signs. One of them is pretty clearly a sign for Cape Brink itself, bearing the name of the landmark and a request to keep it free of litter. The other though, is smaller, and harder to make out, though it does seem to have a sheet of paper pinned to it…

Iono whistles as she looks at the cape. “It looks a lot bigger up close, huh chat? Say, did you guys ever settle on that debate?”

Receiving a chorus of negative responses and continued slapfighting over the exact definition of a cape versus a mountain, Iono shrugs. That’s the internet for you. That second sign, though… curious, Iono walks over and leans in, making to read it…

"EYAAAAAAAAAH!"

The woman's shout resounds through the area, drowning out the rustling of the bush out from which she leaps! "Yah! Yah! Yah!" She lunges directly for Iono, hands outstretched as she tries to grab the streamer and throw her over her shoulder!

“WAH!” With a loud yelp, Iono drops to the ground in panic, rolling away and springing up, leaves and twigs now caught in her impressive hairdo. She quickly starts flailing her sleeves, before she manages to get them into some sort of a fighting pose arrangement, ready to go. “Come on! Put ‘em up!” Her unkempt look hinders any chance at looking intimidating, but Iono doesn’t notice that at all.

"Yahahaha," the old woman standing before Iono guffaws, sporting "accessories" not too dissimilar to Iono's own, with twigs clinging on to her own outfit. "Lightning-quick reaction time! You aren't too bad," she calls out, stretching her legs as if considering leaping again. She does no such thing, however, instead scrutinizing Iono, looking her up and down with all the intensity of a judge in a dog show. "And a fiery spirit, ready to burn away any threats," she notes approvingly as she takes in Iono's stance.

She grins, relaxing her own stance, stamping the ground with one foot as if to take command of the scene. "I thought that old coot softened up too much in his steam, but maybe he had a point about you. You're here for a gym badge, aren't you, whippersnapper?"

“...Huh.” Iono takes a second to process it. “Wait a second. You’re the gym leader? Not just some crazy old woman who lives out here?”

“Sevii League is the league of old people”

“Aaaaand record.”

“Best Iono moment yet!”
“There was an old woman who lived on a cliff”

“I want Iono to fistfight the entire Sevii League”

"Crazy old woman? You don't go around calling everyone you meet names, do you? I'm a crazy old gym leader!" Seemingly more amused by the comment than insulted, she walks up to Iono, getting up close and personal as she bends down and transparently inspects the streamer's thighs. "And you're a spry younginn." Straightening up, she wraps her fingers around Iono's arm, giving it a light squeeze before she leans in, inspecting Iono's eyes. "Spry as they come. You're up for the challenge," she idly muses before backing off.

"This crazy old gym leader is Ultima, holder of the Summit Badge," she says of herself. "If you expect a battle, you'll have to meet me at the battlefield! Aiming for the top of the cape shouldn't be a problem for a younginn like you."

"You, all of you watching," she commands without making so much as an effort to look at the camera, "you agree a hike would do her good. Go on. Tell her."

“LMAO GOTTEM”
“SHE GOT YOU IONO”

“Yeah you need it”

“Lose the streamer weight babyyyyy”

Immediately crossing her arms and pouting at her chat, Iono does her best to look nonplussed. “Meet you at the top, huh? Easy enough.”

With a grin, Iono removes both of her hairclips, activating one of their high-tech functions - the one where she can use them to ride around. She clutches them tightly, and they begin to lift off and carry Iono up the path.

To which Iono immediately feels a hand clasp around her leg, Ultima grabbing her and weighing her down. "Where do you think you're going?" For an old woman, Ultima hides a surprising strength, something Iono gets to feel firsthand as Ultima tugs her back down the path. "You've got legs that are perfectly fine! Use 'em! You have some other problem you aren't telling me about, or are you afraid you can't hike up there on your own two feet?"

“Well, I mean-” Iono gets her hairclips yanked away, Ultima holding them under her arm to keep Iono from trying that again. As chat laughs, Iono rolls her eyes. “Fine, you want me to show off? It’s a little hike, that’s all! I already hiked to Mt. Ember and punched a hole in a rock! What’s a little walk?”

With a “hmph”, Iono starts to walk, following the trail. Thanks to some level of spite moving her legs, Iono is actually making a pretty good pace, though she quickly slows down, realizing she doesn’t know how long the path is and that she shouldn’t burn herself out immediately. She looks back a couple times, surprised to see how effortlessly the much older woman is keeping up with her.

"You'll find a pond about halfway up," Ultima advises her, keeping a little distance - but clearly only deliberately. She might have even been able to keep in step with Iono, if she wanted. "Keep pushing yourself up until you can't. Get too weary to go on, and don't be ashamed to quit!"  As she trails Iono, she keeps a close eye on the streamer, but she also takes the time to look around. The shrubs dotting the path, the view from even only a short distance up the cape, the distant sound of rushing water, watching her, it's not hard to tell that even now, having traversed this path who-knew-how-many times, Ultima still takes it all in with the voraciousness she had when she first ascended the cape.

"The view from up here's changed over the years," she comments wistfully, looking back down the path as they continue their trek.

At first, the path seems to be slow and steady. Iono begins to question it - after all, what was the difference between this and Lèan’s challenge, if they were both about endurance? Heck, she’s even got the energy to talk to Ultima, even as she subconsciously registers that it’s getting a tad steeper. “You’ve been here that long? From the way all the tourists were talking, I didn’t think anyone lived on Cape Brink.”

Iono begins to slow down, though not due to lack of energy - more realizing that as the slope steepens further, she’s gotta place her feet more carefully, aim where to step, and actually pull her legs forward. She wobbles a bit, only to catch herself.

"When I was a young girl," she replies, herself treading more carefully, still confident in her stride, but stepping more deliberately, "it was considered an honor to live at the top of the cape, I'll have you know. Or," she flashes a grin, "the elders back then said it was an honor! The ones my age thought I was insane, yahaha!"

"Not everyone appreciated what the cape represented even back then, but more of us cared about the old stories. The Sevii Islands, risen up out of the sea in only seven days, spreading out from their cradle, that island which to this day we call Birth Island, and among those islands, the highest peak and the deepest cave to connect them to the nourishing seas and sky! The navel of the world, linking the earth to its great mothers. And here, on Boon Island, Cape Brink, the third-tallest peak across the islands, our own natural viewing platform." For all the energy the climb requires, Ultima has no troubles recounting her story with gusto. "They'll tell you it was on Quest Island that they kept watch, but it was here they spotted the ships first! From the top of the cape, at the very brink of the world, you can see everything that's on the horizon!"

"And I saw it all, believe you me, younginn. I saw their flags flying over our islands, and I saw the ships sailing in less and less often. I saw the market shrink, shops close up as they packed up. I saw the fireworks when their ships sailed off, taking those flags with them. But it wasn't long before I could see it growing again. The tents spread across the island, more and more of them every month. The ferries made their trips every three hours, then every two, then every hour. Once," she sighs, "I could climb down anytime I wanted."

"And now…" As Ultima continues with her speech, Iono catches the glint off the item she pulls out of a pocket - noticing Ultima drawing a Level Ball. Without missing a beat in her story, the old gym leader calls out a Flapple, the Pokémon flying over to a particularly steep ledge in the path ahead. "...I still can, yahaha! The difference now is that they call me weird and tell me I scare off the tourists." Flapple releases what appears to be a seed, dropping it on the edge of the ledge, and from the seed sprouts vines, vines which rapidly grow down across the face of the ledge.

Ultima approaches the newly grown vines, tugging on them to test their strength. "Hyup!" She hefts herself up, using the vines as climbing ropes, pulling herself up to conquer this portion of the ascent. "Can't expect everyone who comes to challenge me to climb the cape, but when someone comes who can make it, there's no better test. If they can make the climb, they earn a battle. If they can make the climb and learn something about these islands on the way up, they earn something more valuable than that."

While chat is tuning out entirely, mostly trying to make memes out of the various stories that Ultima is telling her, Iono is for once at complete odds with them. She listens with genuine interest, not interrupting or joking around, instead just keeping up with the speech. Iono actually laughs when Ultima just declares that she’d scare off the tourists. “Thaaat doesn’t surprise me too much. I noticed that nobody else on this island even had a Rainbow Pass.

Did you know, someone said they didn’t even know you could go to Six Island?” Iono mentions, already able to tell Ultima will get a kick out of it. Her expression falls when she sees the vines, though, knowing that with how much she’s already hiked up here there’s no way Ultima would buy her being unable to climb them. And she refuses to back down.

So, grabbing the vines, Iono begins to pull herself up, gulping as she hears them rustle. Please don’t snap please don’t snap.

"Yaha, thought they couldn't go to Fortune Island?" Iono's prediction turns out to be spot-on, the streamer earning a hearty laugh from the old woman. "That's where they're missing out! Why buy the pre-made stuff when you can go to the Pattern Bush and collect honey yourself! They don't even make the sweets down in that market right! Get your honey from quest, then go and get your berries fresh on Kin, that's the way it should be done. Make 'em while everything is fresh, then go back an' eat 'em where you made 'em!" Ultima looks back at the climbing Iono with an approving grin. "Let me let you in on this challenge's open secret. I don't want a whippersnapper who can handle the cape to use any fancy tools to climb up, but I won't snap at you if you ask your Pokémon to pitch in. It's still muscle power when it comes from them! You might need the boost as we get near the top."

"And you out there!" She calls out to Iono's chat once more. "Take a page from her book! Don't you go settlin' for the typical experience! When you get goin' somewhere in life, go see what the rest don't see. Peer at the horizon! Don't go an' turn away from it! That's advice from a crazy old woman, so don't go ignoring it!"

“ULTIMA-SENPAI NOTICED ME”

“It’s always the old people who understand us”

“I’m going right out there to meet Iono!”

“She’s right about the Pokemon!”

Iono thinks as she pulls herself up a bit further, managing to climb up on top of the ledge and groaning as she flops over. Magneton and Rotom could be a bit too against the spirit of the rules… but with a toss of a Pokeball, Iono sends out Bellibolt and climbs on the back of her frog, taking a short breather as it carries her through!

Ultima nods approvingly as Iono climbs atop Bellibolt, the older woman sticking with Flapple's assistance, the apple-clad serpentine dragon giving her more than enough aid with its Leech Seed-derived vines. While the climb up the cape isn't an easy one, proving quite a workout as, more and more, the two women have to clamber up the increasingly rocky path, it's also a straightforward task. The women make steady progress, until, finally…

"I hope you weren't expecting that I freshly cleaned," Ultima jokes as the women crest Cape Brink, arriving at Ultima's home and the small lake near the peak, its roaring waterfall feeding the larger lake halfway down the mountain. "So, you need to catch your breath? You either look at the view now, or let me know you'll be admiring it later. You've earned yourself a battle!"

“Mmmmmmm.” Iono groans. Bellibolt had started to tire out during the last sections of the climb, and Iono had to recall it to leave it fresh for battle, meaning the streamer had basically clambered up the last, nearly-vertical part of the cape’s path with her bare hands. At the mention of the battle, though, Iono manages to sit up and stretch, her legs wobbly but knowing that she’s past the part where she needs to worry about that.

With her usual sharktooth grin, Iono’s brave face returns, the streamer ready to go. “We’ll take that battle now. I’ll relax after I have two badges!”

"Yahahahaaaa! You're the liveliest younginn I've met on this side of Kin Island! Forget the speeches! Train yourself on the road of the ultimate, and show the world your strength!"

"Flapple, show her the frenzied attacks of dragons!"

Ultima hardly leaves Iono with even time to call out a Pokémon, Flapple leading off with an Acid Spray, dousing the cape with a putrid liquid to start the battle on its own terms!

Iono just smirks as she leads off with the best opener she could put out against something like this, sending out her Magneton to resist the Acid Spray. Though it doesn’t have any good moves to immediately target Flapple’s weaknesses, Iono’s strategy here is to wear it down with sheer power, using her Magneton’s defenses to endure until it’s out!

Flapple rears back as Magneton shrugs off the opening attack, seemingly taken aback as it rises higher into the sky. Not about to miss an opportunity to hit back, Magneton gives chase, spiraling towards Flapple as it ascends, giving it no room to breathe and no room to double back. Misfired Leech Seed attacks do nothing to shake Magneton, the parasitic little seeds sailing on past the living magnet as Flapple struggles to hit its mark.

Finally, coming close to leaving behind the cape and flying too far from its trainer, Flapple slows its climb, coming to an aerial stop, with Magneton rapidly closing the distance. Flying further up not an option, and trying to go to the left or to the right a surefire way to get hit by a Thunderbolt or Sonic Boom, Flapple makes a tight turn, reorienting itself for a descent as Magneton, spotting its opponent's u-turn, fires off a Flash Cannon!

The burst of light collides with the descending dragon, Magneton blasting it directly in the face at a close range, and the flash consumes Flapple entirely. Down below, Iono celebrates her Pokémon's success, confident she had make the right call with Magneton!

And Ultima?

Ultima watches calmly, gazing into the sky above where the chase had unfolded.

"#flashed"

"made into flapplesauce"

"that's our iono!"

"enter iono zone, get blasted in the face. seems right."

"you go magneton"

"hey uh whats that"

As Iono's chat observes the battle, a new light emerges in the sky, Flapple, clearly not unscathed by the attack, nevertheless continues its descent at a breakneck pace, cloaked in a powerful aura.

"dragon rush?"

"oh lawd its coming"

"nooooo! magneton poor baby!!"

"hang tough"

Taking a nosedive in a literal sense, Flapple twists like a corkscrew as it rushes down at Magneton, slamming into it with extreme force boosted by draconic power, sending the magnet hurtling towards the peak of the cape.

Magneton's rough landing throws up a thick cloud of dust, obscuring part of the battlefield as a weary Flapple pulls out of its dive and cautiously approaches the cloud. Its flight already unstable, Flapple draws itself into its apple exterior, letting itself plummet to the ground with Grav Apple to seal the job by landing directly on Magneton!

A bolt of lightning bursting forth from the dust intercepts the attack, though, Flapple forced out of its apple by a surge of electricity coursing through its body. Resisting the move didn't mean shrugging it off entirely, and the shock stunning Flapple gives Magneton, a little dinged up but still full of energy, a chance to rise back up.

"Burn through every defense! Blast them until it breaks!" Ultima, seeing Iono's strategy of sending out the sturdy Magneton prove its merit, issues her command, and Magneton prepares to weather another attack from Flapple!

Only for Ultima to recall the Pokémon, Magneton scrambling to switch gears as the old woman instead sends out Turtonator! To Magneton's credit, Iono's Pokémon quickly fires off a Thunderbolt, the electricity surging into Turtonator. Unfortunately for the streamer and her team, though, the dragon-turtle proves itself sturdy, standing firm and tanking the attack.

Even as Turtonator flares up, its snout expanding as it fires off a Flamethrower, Magneton tries to hang on, trying to use its speed advantage over the turtle to get out of harm's way. Iono, too, scrambles to change up her strategy, pulling out a Pokéball just in time for Magneton to take the full brunt of a Flamethrower attack! Ouch.

Magneton's fans in Iono's chat cry out as the magnet lands on the ground with a klunk, utterly exhausted by the attack. Iono regroups quickly, sending Bellibolt into battle to avenge Magneton now that the frog had had its chance to rest.

A quick Mud Shot marks Bellibolt's entrance to battle, dirt and mud covering Turtonator as the attack lands, but even the supereffective move only makes a slight dent in the turtle's defenses, Turtonator tanking the attack with a raised arm. On the flipside, Turtonator struggles to break through Bellibolt's defenses, Bellibolt dousing its second Flamethrower with a Water Pulse.

Iono contemplates her next move, watching the battle turn into an apparent stalemate. How to break through that defense…? As she studies her foe, she finds inspiration in a rather unexpected place - the mud clinging to Turtonator!

"Alright! Tackle it into the water!" Bellibolt turns to its trainer, catching Iono's wink - something which her chat and Ultima catch, too, causing a flurry of activity in the former and leading the latter to raise a brow.

Bellibolt lowers its head and throws itself into a tackle, prompting Turtonator, confident in its sturdy shell, to turn away from the frog, laying down a Shell Trap and waiting for Bellibolt to make contact. Chat braces for an explosion…

…and sure enough, one comes, but Bellibolt isn't the one blasted away. As Turtonator turns, Bellibolt fires off another Mud Shot, plugging up the hole in Turtonator's shell with mud and gunk and causing the Shell Trap to backfire. Launched into the air by its own explosion, Turtonator falls back to the cape collapsed and KOed, forcing Ultima to withdraw the turtle and evening up the match.

As Ultima applauds, Flapple returns to the battlefield, and, just as before, it wastes no time in launching an attack. Though the tired dragon moves more slowly than before, it still has enough of an advantage over the less mobile Bellibolt to successfully land a Leech Seed, vines ensnaring Bellibolt and sapping its strength.

With Bellibolt all wrapped up, Flapple flies high once more, trying to put distance between itself and its opponent so it can let the Leech Seed do its work and heal up without Bellibolt pestering it. Thinking itself safe, it pirouettes and cuts through the air as it performs a Dragon Dance, but soon finds a nuisance on its tail! A Zap Cannon fired off by Bellibolt pursues it through the skies, forcing it to take evasive maneuvers, but even with its speed boosted by the Dragon Dance, Flapple can't shake the Zap Cannon.

Seeing no other choice, it zooms towards Bellibolt, curling into its apple form once again and dropping down like a lead weight. Apple hits frog, and plasma ball slams into apple, and in the ensuing pile up…

A panting Flapple rocks back and forth erratically as it struggles to lift back off just above the defeated Bellibolt. The Leech Seed had given it just enough energy to tough out the Zap Cannon, and now it roars in defiance as Iono switches out to Rotom.

Rotom comes onto the scene zipping around the cape, the little electrical ghost putting Flapple to shame in the speed department, especially with Flapple so weakened. Unable to fly any longer, Flapple descends to the ground and withdraws into its apple, closing up as a last-ditch defense against Rotom's Shadow Ball.

The move knocks Flapple onto its side, but it's still not quite enough to KO the dragon, Flapple weakly poking its head up, hissing at Rotom. If it were going to go out, it'd go out on the offensive…

Putting all of its energy, all of its Dragon Dance-boosted attack into one last Dragon Rush, Flapple forces itself up, beating its wings like it's trying to lift a rock, and charges at Rotom. The ghost responds with a Shock Wave, and the spreading electrical ring passes through Flapple! Yet the dragon continues on, undeterred, its double resistance helping it to power through.

Flapple finishes its charge, making direct contact with Rotom, and sending the ghost hurtling backwards, but Rotom isn't the only one to suffer on account of the attack. Flapple's furious wingbeats slow, and, with one last hoarse roar, Flapple falls to the ground unconscious.

"There's strength in your offense and your defense," Ultima concedes, giddy as the battle moves into its final stage. "But now's the moment you give in! Enjoy the view now, because my sea cannon's going to blast you down the falls! Kingdra, teach all the younginns out there watching us what strength you build climbing up this cape!"

More than the usual flash of light accompanies Kingdra's entrance, the seadragon conjuring up a Twister as it materializes in the pond on top of Cape Brink, immediately diving into the water to surface and take potshots at Rotom through the new maelstrom!

Chat is on edge! The Iono Zone is very concerned, several of them asking if Iono has to take the trial again when she loses - not even asking if. Rotom is doing its best to keep far away from the Twister, occasionally trying to fire off a Thunderbolt into the midst. Though one of them gets through, judging by Kingdra’s recoil, it’s clear that Rotom is at a disadvantage.

Trying a Shadow Ball instead, Iono bites her teeth together as she looks around… and then notices a junk pile nearby. The gears start to turn. “HEY, ULTIMA! What’s with the junk?”

"Hn?" For the most part, Ultima has kept up with Iono's strategies without issue, but a hint of confusion shines through as Iono suddenly inquires about the pile of junk sitting behind her house. "You volunteering to carry it down the cape? I'll take it!" She jokes. "Hauling new appliances up is enough work! I can't always bring 'em down when they go on me!"

“Well, I might just take one of them!” Iono says with a smirk. She knew all about Rotom’s ability, and she runs over to the junk pile, trying to heave one of the items free. If she can just get it loose, allowing Rotom to freely possess it…

Ohohoho, so that's what she was up to, was it? "YAHAHAYAHAHA!" Ultima is besides herself laughing as she pieces together Iono's plan, jumping up like a schoolgirl at a concert for her favorite band. "Using the field to your advantage like that! Are you sure you weren't born here, younginn!" As impressed she is by Iono's strategy, though, she's not going to make it easy on the streamer! "Kingdra, give her a drink!"

The seadragon points its snout into the air, and the water of the pond swirls up, a vortex stirring it together right above Kingdra's snout as Kingdra pumps even more water into the growing, choppy mix. When the whirlpool swirls above Kingdra's head with enough intensity to match the winds swirling around the cape's peak, Kingdra releases the whirlpool, sending a vortex of water, spinning through the air like a top, to engulf Rotom and the pile of junk and to drag them all into the pond with it!

The second that Iono sees the whirlpool forming, she keeps kicking and pushing, finally dislodging exactly what she was hoping for - an old, busted refrigerator, now free of the pile. “OVER HERE! QUICK!” Iono waves her floppy sleeves to signal Rotom, the small electric ghost beelining for the device. Rotom seems to make it, right as the whirlpool descends, the junk pile vanishing from sight…

And the pond suddenly begins to freeze over, Iono laughing and chat celebrating. The pogfaces fly, along with the donations, as they realize Iono’s plan worked perfectly, Fridge Rotom and its new Ice type moves now able to force Kingdra out of its best habitat. Sure, it’s nothing super effective, but Kingdra can’t swim around in a block of ice, now can it?

It's an effective move! Kingdra suddenly ends up on the backfoot - or backfin, as it were - as, rather than pull Rotom - and possibly Iono - into its share of the battlefield, Rotom takes away one of its greatest advantages. But is it enough to stop Kingdra entirely? Not quite, it turns out, as Kingdra beats back the encroaching ice with Scald, preserving a portion of the pond for itself.

Still, though, it can't keep much of the pond from freezing over, and if it focuses on keeping the ice at bay, it'll be defenseless against Rotom… As Kingdra debates what to do, it whips itself around, hearing Ultima clear her throat.

"You've given me a good time, Iono! It's time I repay you, and it's time we end this battle. You fought well, but it won't be enough for you! Now, learn the strength that Pokémon can have! Learn the power of one of the ultimate moves! Kingdra, Draco Meteoooooooooor!"

Not needing the instructions twice, trapped on all sides now by the ice, threatening to force it under the water completely - or worse, out of the water - Kingdra takes aim, pointing its snout at the sky and charging up power.

A glowing orb - no, not only an orb, but a rock, shaped from draconic energy and glowing red-hot with it - shoots into the air, exploding like a firework, its chunks raining down all over the cape, bursting with energy as they land!

Ohhh boy. Even with the defense buffs that Rotom has in fridge form, Iono’s not sure how she’s gonna get through that! She managed to come up with something smart for Machamp, but what about here? What’s her best call, what’s the best way out of it… meet it head-on? No. That won’t be enough.

There’s gotta be something, and if she can use the terrain… that’s it. That’s it!

“Now! Thunderbolt - on the lake!”

With that, Rotom fires a huge pulse of electricity, right at the frozen lake! The strength of it strikes the lake like a hammerblow, cracking it and sending chunks flying up, as Rotom launches several large pieces into the air to try and mitigate the damage of the Draco Meteor!

Ice, electricity, draconic energy, it's quite a potent mixture! The chunks of ice are far from a perfect shield, larger pieces shattering into icy shrapnel as they're hit by the exploding faux-meteorites. Some of those ice pieces hit Rotom, and some hit Kingdra; not even Ultima escapes from the makeshift hailstorm, the old woman putting her arm up to block the ice pellets raining down on her.

Alas! Some meteorites still manage to get through, dotting the cape with booming bursts of energy! Rotom's strategy is not a foolproof one.

It is, however, one that works well enough. Rotom is spared a direct strike, but Kingdra is not! The same electricity which breaks apart the ice courses through the waters of the pond, reaching Kingdra and frying the trapped dragon. Were it only the icy storm or only the electricity, that might not be enough, but the combination of the two?

It's more than Kingdra can handle, the seadragon slumping in the water, the winds around the brink fading away. The storm subsides, whipping winds once again replaced by the sounds of a roaring waterfall, and, as Ultima recalls Kingdra, Iono stands victorious.

Though she's only a single woman, the applause that Ultima offers Iono is raucous, uproarious even. "It's been too long since a challenger gave me a battle like that! You're a master of ultimate technique and power!"

Coming over to Iono, Ultima gives the streamer a congratulatory slap on the back. "It hasn't always been easy watching the island I called home change, but if it means battling whippersnappers like you, Iono, I'll take the tourists! Have me on your little show sometime! But for now," she says, pulling out a badge, a stylized brown rocky spire with a similarly stylized green, serpentine dragon curling around it, "in recognition of your strength, strength that brought you up to the brink and back from it, take the Summit Badge!"

“Haaaaaa… haaaaa. Woooooo!” With that, Iono recalls Rotom, taking the fridge with her - Ultima didn’t seem to be complaining, after all. Flopping over and rolling to take a look off the view of Cape Brink, she takes the badge and pins it next to the Rubble Badge she earned from her first gym encounter. “Two down, five to go!” Iono grins.

“...I’m just gonna chill here for a while. Take advantage of that view.”

"You do that," Ultima says with a slight chuckle. "Anyone who climbs all this way and doesn't take it in, why, they'd have to be a crazy old woman! Enjoy the view, and I'll fix something to eat. Climbing and battling build up an appetite, and a younginn needs to keep eating to stay healthy!"
